Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) can cause jaw pain, muscle tension, headaches, facial discomfort and difficulty with chewing. Botox® may be considered as one treatment option for selected patients.
For some patients, excessive activity or tension in the jaw muscles may contribute to TMD symptoms. Botox® (botulinum toxin type A) may be considered as one treatment option for selected patients.
When injected into specific jaw muscles, Botox® temporarily reduces excessive muscle activity, which may help decrease muscle tension and associated discomfort.
Treatment is provided by Dr. Jennifer Tung. Suitability is determined after an examination.
TMD can have many different causes, and Botox® is not appropriate for every patient. An assessment of your jaw joints, muscles, bite, symptoms and oral health comes first.
Request an assessmentDepending on the cause and severity of your symptoms, Botox® treatment may help:
Reduce excessive jaw muscle activity and tension.
Relieve pain associated with overactive jaw muscles.
Reduce muscle-related jaw discomfort and tenderness.
Help patients who experience significant muscle tension or clenching.
Before treatment, we carefully assess your jaw joints, muscles, bite, symptoms and oral health to determine whether Botox® may be appropriate for you.
For some patients, Botox® may be used as part of a comprehensive TMD management plan, together with other approaches such as a night guard, exercises, habit modification, stress management and other dental or medical treatments when appropriate.
